Penneshaw is noted for its relaxed country living and hospitality and is home to the Fairy Penguins who nest in and around the town. Some of the town's facilities include a 9 hole golf course, boat ramp, tennis courts, shops, hotels, restaurants, cafes, petrol and gas outlet and also a Tourism Information Centre.

To get to the Island, Kangaroo Island Sealink operates a daily service from Cape Jervis, the closest point on the mainland, to Penneshaw. The drive from Adelaide, South Australia, takes approximately 1.5 hours down the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula. The crossing from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw takes approximately 45 minutes.
